In several studies, it was reported that SMN2-inducing histone deacetylase inhibitors (such as benzamide M344, phenylbutyrate, and 4-phenylbutyrate-tethered trichostatin A analogue AR42) and aminoglycosides (such as tobramycin) increased the number of gems in fibroblast cell lines derived from SMA patients [17,18,19,20,21]. Here, SMN2 is linked to proximal spinal muscular atrophy.
