TGFB1 and pterygium: Despite the preponderance of TGFβ2 in the vitreous and aqueous humor, as well as in tears in several eye pathologies [17,23], the TGFβ1 isoform has been found to be overexpressed in pterygium conjunctiva, conjunctival fibroblasts explanted from recurrent pterygia, and the aqueous humor of individuals with clinically active glaucoma [40], where it was reported to be a strong inducer of conjunctival myofibroblast activation [15,19,20,21,22,24,41,42,43].
