Mechanistically, employing siRNA-mediated repression of HOTAIR in glioblastoma cell lines (LN229 and U87), the authors found that it regulates cell cycle progression via its inhibitory actions on signaling through transcription factor E2F1, cyclin D1 and E, and cyclin-dependent kinases CDK2 and 4; and via its stimulatory actions on cell cycle proteins, p16 and p21. The gene discussed is HOTAIR; the disease is glioblastoma.
