Fusidic acid is a triterpenoid compound that was found to inhibit C. albicans efflux pumps CDR1, CDR2, and MDR1. Moreover, fusidic acid augmented the antifungal activity of fluconazole in vitro and in a vulvovaginitis mouse model at very low concentrations, indicating its safety for topical application that was initially demonstrated by cytotoxicity experiment on human RBCs. The gene discussed is CDR2; the disease is vulvovaginitis.
