ICAM1 and malaria: They are found in the red blood cells and liver cells of the individual; however, it is believed that Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP-1) binds to the endothelial cell receptors CD-36, thrombospondin (TSP), and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and that there is a receptor related to malaria that mediates the attachment of pRBCs to the microvascular endothelium.
