Regarding the brain oxidative damage related to DM, it has been found that hyperglycemia promotes increased levels of NO− and LP both in plasma and in the liver and brain tissue, but also an increase in antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase and glutathione, as well as the levels of proinflammatory molecules such as IL‐6 and TNF‐α as early as 30 days after induction of diabetes DM1 with STZ in rats.41 This evidence concerns the gene SOD1 and diabetes mellitus.
