The process of membrane vesiculation, which involvesthe formationof membrane-bound vesicles, relies heavily on the ATP-binding cassettetransporter A1 (ABCA1).84,85 Research has indicatedthat individuals suffering from uncomplicated or non-cerebral severemalaria, who possess genetic variations in the ABCA1 gene, exhibitnotably reduced levels of EV release.86 On the other hand, patients with cerebral malaria or multiorgandysfunction as well as the wildtype ABCA1 gene exhibit significantlyhigher EV release. The gene discussed is ABCA1; the disease is cerebral malaria.
