In two earlier studies by Khor et al and Wang et al, HLA-A*11 was enriched in Japanese and Chinese patients with severe COVID-19.13,22 Additionally, a cross-sectional study in Greek patients with COVID-19 showed that the frequency of the A*11 allele was higher in hospitalized patients versus mild suffers.23 Another study showed that the binding affinity across HLA alleles and viral peptides is weak in patients with HLA-A*11:01 phenotypes, so they are more vulnerable to the severe COVID-19 disease.14 The gene discussed is HLA-A; the disease is COVID-19.
