Abdel-Rahman et al. assessed the effects of saffron on cerebral ischemia in a mouse model and showed that saffron could significantly reduce lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide (NO) levels, and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), besides a decrease in the expression of caspase-3 and Bax protein, consequently a significant reduction in apoptotic nerve cells. This evidence concerns the gene NPPB and brain ischemia.
