Investigating the role of cathepsin G in the induction of atherosclerosis in Ldlr−/− mice on WTD showed that cathepsin G acts as an atherogenic factor in the early stages of the disease; however, it degrades LDL (having no effect on HDL or triglyceride content) through which it plays a protective role in the progression of atherosclerosis [75].
