In conjunction with a study showing haptoglobin expression in the cord blood of premature neonates in response to inflammation is associated with decreased risk of IVH and cerebral palsy (143), these results may suggest that haptoglobin-mediated hemoglobin scavenging mechanisms are exhausted after IVH and that upregulating brain haptoglobin may be a potential target to explore to prevent hemoglobin-mediated neurotoxicity (143).
