CYP27B1 and sarcoidosis: The extra-renal activity of the CYP27B1 enzyme became a subject of interest starting in 1981 when high levels of 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D were found in the blood of an anephric patient diagnosed with active sarcoidosis [27], the source of bio-activation being later identified in the macrophage which also possesses the ability to express the CYP27B1 enzyme [28].
