African Americans are at higher risk for developing dementia than other ethnic and non-Hispanic White Americans (Mehta and Yeo, 2017), possibly due to a higher prevalence of risk factors including cardiovascular conditions such as diabetes as well as various genetic factors including APOE and ABCA7 that increase dementia risk (Froehlich et al., 2001; Barnes and Bennett, 2014; Alzheimer’s Association, 2021). Here, APOE is linked to dementia.
