During a specific physical examination of 18,383 healthy elderly people in Tokyo, Japan, it was found that patients with Hb <12 g/dL (male) or Hb <11 g/dL (female) had a 2.215- or 2.2-fold risk, respectively, of new CKD compared with individuals with normal Hb levels (37). The gene discussed is GSTM1; the disease is chronic kidney disease.
