Recent MR data indicate that 67% of the effects of genetically downregulated IL-6 signaling on large artery atherosclerotic stroke could be mediated by a reduction in circulating CXCL10 levels.23 These results suggest CXCL10 to be a potential causal mediator of atherosclerosis and as such might serve as a promising, potentially more specific drug target than IL-6 signaling. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is atherosclerosis.
