Recent studies have shown increased numbers of proinflammatory macrophages as well as elevated concentrations of the pro-fibrotic adipokine, leptin, TNF-α, and IL-6 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and blood from adolescents and adults with severe asthma (Stream and Sutherland, 2012; Sutherland et al., 2012; Farzan, 2013), contributing to disease severity and diminished responsiveness to prescribed therapies. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is asthma.
