Furthermore, many of these miRNAs’ validated targets were enriched in the functional KEGG pathways directly related to CVD, such as ‘fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis’ and ‘cardiac muscle contraction’, or functional pathways highly related to the pathogenesis of CVD, including the regulation of the ‘insulin signaling pathway’ and ‘insulin resistance’ (17 and 16 miRNAs, respectively), ‘cholesterol metabolism’ and ‘ABC transporters’ (12 and 11 miRNAs, respectively), and fat metabolism (Figure 3B).
