PRL and preeclampsia: Interestingly, in women with preeclampsia, higher levels of substrates for the production of vasoinhibins, such as PRL, placental lactogen, and growth hormone, as well as proteolytic enzymes secreted by the placenta, including cathepsin D, metalloproteinases (MMPs) MMP-2 and MMP-3, and bone morphogenic protein-1, were observed, compared with women in normal pregnancy.
