AKT1 and colorectal adenocarcinoma: Noteworthy, despite Caco-2 cells being derived from a human colorectal adenocarcinoma, this cell line is widely used in studies related to intestinal barrier damage since, unlike other colorectal cell lines, Caco-2 cells do not present mutation in genes related to PI3K/Akt/mTOR (PI3K: phosphoinositide 3-kinases; Akt: protein kinase B; and mTOR: mammalian target of rapamycin) or in the RAS–RAF–MAPK (RAS: from “rat sarcoma virus”, GTPase; RAF: from “rapidly accelerated fibrosarcoma”, serine/threonine-specific protein kinases; and MAPK: mitogen-activated protein kinase) signalling axis [53].
