MAPT and Cognitive impairment: Not only do stress and high GC levels trigger Tau pathology similar to that seen in AD brain tissue (i.e., Tau hyperphosphorylation and aggregation) [13–15], but Tau depletion is protective against both amyloid beta- and stress-induced neurotoxicity and cognitive impairment in animal models [15–17], indicating Tau’s essential role as a mediator of neurodegeneration in the context of AD and chronic stress.
