In lung cancer tissue and blood, Zilionis54 described a subtype of classical monocytes (termed hbMono3: blood; hMono3: tissue) that uniquely expressed a set of neutrophil-associated genes, including S100A8/S100A9 and CSF3R. The hbMono3 transcriptional signature was associated with shorter survival times and was conserved in mouse blood and human lung tumor infiltrates. The gene discussed is S100A8; the disease is lung cancer.
