In lung cancer tissue and blood, Zilionis54 described a subtype of classical monocytes (termed hbMono3: blood; hMono3: tissue) that uniquely expressed a set of neutrophil-associated genes, including S100A8/S100A9 and CSF3R. The hbMono3 transcriptional signature was associated with shorter survival times and was conserved in mouse blood and human lung tumor infiltrates. Here, S100A8 is linked to lung carcinoma.
