Specific CAR-mediated recognition of surface tumour antigens is usually achieved by NK-cell expression of single-chain variable fragment (scFv) and the potential of CAR-NK cells to treat cancer was demonstrated in a landmark study published in 2020, in which anti-CD19 CAR-NK cells derived from cord blood were administered to 11 HLA-mismatched patients with CLL or non-Hodgkin lymphoma [47]. Here, CD19 is linked to B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
