Patients with HF show high levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, all of which are secreted in a continuous manner [8]: TNF-α, IL-1, -6, -8, -10, -10R, -33 and -18 [1], vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 2 (CCL2), monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 [9], intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) [10], myeloperoxidase (MPO), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) [3]. The gene discussed is NPPB; the disease is hydrops fetalis.
