Cluster 5 contains ABD-enriched genes highly expressed in both apples and pears, several of which have already been identified as ABD-enriched markers in whole adipose tissue (HOXA [27] and HOXD cluster genes, TBX5, and HOTAIRM1 [36]) and others that have been previously associated with type 2 diabetes pathogenesis (TBX5, PITX2, SKAP2 [37]) (Figure 2A). Here, TBX5 is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
