In particular, inflammation-associated markers, such as stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1), Interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), as well as matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and pain-associated mediators cyclooxygenase 1 and 1 (COX-1/-2), are upregulated in the subacromial bursae of patients with a rotator cuff tear compared to healthy controls [16,17,18,19,20,21].
