Studies have shown that cholesterol levels in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with vitiligo are significantly higher than in normal cells due to increased expression of the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase) (Dell'Anna et al., 2010). Here, HMGCR is linked to vitiligo.
