In BCC CAFs, most mtDNA-encoded genes did not show altered expression, with the exceptions of the MT-RNR1 and MT-RNR2 genes, encoding the mitochondrial-specific 12s and 16s ribosomal RNA subunits, and the Humanin open reading frame, encoding a micropeptide involved in stress responses and inflammation, which show an average fold change of ~ 6.0, 3.1 and ~ 9.3 as compared to NFs, respectively. The gene discussed is MT-RNR2; the disease is skin basal cell carcinoma.
