ATP2B4 and malaria: Two target genes were chosen, Basigin (BSG, CD147) which is known to be a universal receptor for P. falciparum invasion (Crosnier et al., 2011) as a proof of principle, and ATP2B4 (PMCA4) since natural variation in this gene has been correlated to resistance to severe malaria (Timmann et al., 2012).
