APOE and early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease: Association studies have demonstrated apoE4 to be a genetic risk factor for cardiovascular disease, as it can cause high levels of circulating cholesterol, in the form of LDL as well as a genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s disease.4–7 The critical role of APOE in health and disease highlights the need for additional research into the protein’s mechanism of action and potential for therapeutic strategies.8 Mechanistic studies would be greatly facilitated with the availability of validated and high-quality antibodies.
