Kalbitz et al., 2016 observed a significant increase in levels of NLRP3 and IL-1β in left ventricular cardiomyocytes of mice with sepsis induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). When the NLRP3 gene was knocked down in mice, they exhibited lower levels of cardiovascular injury and plasma IL-1β and IL-6 compared to wild-type mice. These findings suggested the involvement of NLRP3 in SIMI. Similarly, other studies have demonstrated improved survival rates and cardiac function in septic mice following NLRP3 gene knockout (Busch et al., 2021).
