Regarding other antioxidant gene like CAT and SOD genes and its associations with NIHL, a meta-analysis conducted by Wu et al. (2023) demonstrated a significant relationship between CAT polymorphism (rs208679) and NIHL in the allele model (A vs. G) and dominant model (AA vs. GG + AG), where the A allele is mutated to G allele, could affect transcription factor binding and as a consequence, CAT enzymatic activity decreases and not the expression level that could result in an increase in hydroxyl radicals’ formation and elevated diseases risk. This evidence concerns the gene CAT and noise induced hearing loss.
