People with diabetes may experience a decrease in both the amount and quality of sleep as a result of the frequent disruptions caused by manifestations of diabetes such as nocturia and diabetic neuropathic pain.28 Another proposed mechanism is that sleep deprivation causes the hypothalamus to secrete corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) which activates the pituitary gland to release the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Here, CRH is linked to diabetes mellitus.
