Remarkably, HIV-1 trans-infection mediated by APCs is 10 to 1000-fold more efficient at infecting CD4+ T cells compared to cis-infection in vitro [3,4,5,6,7,8], and trans-infection can shield HIV-1 from immune surveillance, neutralizing antibodies, and ART [9,10,11,12,13,14]. The gene discussed is CD4; the disease is infection.
