In previous studies, global DNA methylation was analyzed in MZ twins concordant and discordant for T1D and an overall rise in DNA methylation was observed in affected twins [4].The methylation patterns in the insulin promoter have been examined by Fradin et al. The authors described variations in methylation between patients with T1D and healthy individuals and identified a 3-CpG-hypomethylation pattern that seemed to be present only in these patients. This evidence concerns the gene INS and type 1 diabetes mellitus.
