Its aggregation can causediabetes type 2 and injection amyloidosis.20,21 In the former case, an overproduction of insulin significantly increasesthe hormone concentration in the pancreas.22 This can trigger protein aggregation, which results in the formationof highly toxic oligomers and fibrils.23,24 In the lattercase, similar protein aggregates can be formed in the derma as a resultof insulin injection.25 In both cases,insulin oligomers and fibrils may trigger the aggregation of otherproteins, which results in systemic amyloidosis.26 The gene discussed is INS; the disease is primary systemic amyloidosis.
