Currently, data from European, North American, and Asian countries suggest that the gut microbiome of individuals with T2DM exhibits a depletion of butyrate-producing bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria, and a reduction in the genera of Bifidobacterium, Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, Akkermansia, and Roseburia. On the other hand, these T2DM patients' microbiome profiles were found to contain bacterial species that deplete probiotics, species that degrade mucin, and show an increase in the Ruminococcus, Fusobacteria, and Blautia genera12,13. The gene discussed is MUC5AC; the disease is type 2 diabetes mellitus.
