Despite the differences in their structures, both GLP‐1 agonists and the natural GLP‐1 hormone interact with the GLP‐1 receptors in the body to elicit similar effects, such as stimulating insulin secretion, inhibiting glucagon release, delaying gastric emptying, and promoting a sense of fullness, which can lead to better glucose control and weight management in people with type 2 diabetes (Figure 3). This evidence concerns the gene GLP1R and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
