Compared with patients without anaemia, patients classified as anaemic were on average older (63.4 years versus 52.9 years), had significantly lower levels of kidney function by eGFR or creatinine (P≤0.001) and serum albumin concentrations (P≤0.001), and had significantly higher levels of inflammatory markers (P≤0.001) and glycaemia (P≤0.001) (Table 2).
