Cardiomyocyte mPTP opening has been linked with necrotic tissue damage (infarction) during reperfused myocardial infarction in multiple studies showing that pharmacological inhibition (13) or genetic ablation (11, 12) of cyclophilin D, an established potentiator of mPTP opening, limits infarct size. The gene discussed is PPIF; the disease is myocardial infarction.
