SLC48A1 and infection: SLC48A1 is known to mediate heme export from phagolysosomes following RBC ingestion (51), which may explain its high expression in macrophages isolated from the bone marrow, liver and spleen – sites of high RBC turnover; however, SLC48A1 function in lung macrophages, peritoneal macrophages and its association to macrophages during infection with Salmonella remain to be defined.
