It has been demonstrated that the purinergic receptor P2X7R plays a primary role in many different inflammatory processes underlying numerous pathologies (ocular diseases, systemic autoimmune diseases, liver diseases, COVID-19-related ARDS) through activating many different signaling pathways, ultimately determining the activation of inflammatory cells and/or the direct synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines [8,9,27]. The gene discussed is P2RX7; the disease is acute respiratory distress syndrome.
