Chewing betel nut, which contains betel nut extracts like ripe areca nut extracts (rANE) and tender areca nut extracts (tANE), increases the risk of oral cancer because it promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the upregulation of the expression of inflammatory factors including cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and interleukin-1 (IL-1) [12,13]. The gene discussed is PTGS2; the disease is lip and oral cavity carcinoma.
