In severely ill COVID-19 patients, the dysregulated, and uncontrolled production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as higher levels of interleukins-6 (IL-6), Tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), ferritin, and C-reactive protein (CRP) leading to hypoxic respiratory failure are the major contributor to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and are linked to a severe deterioration in health [4–6]. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is acute respiratory distress syndrome.
