TERT and cancer: The cancer driver effect of TERT promoter mutations in tumour development has been shown by a proof-of-concept study showing that correction of the −124A mutation to the wild type −124G blocked the binding of ETS transcription factors to the TERT promoter, reduced TERT gene transcription and telomerase expression, and induced senescence and proliferative arrest of glioblastoma cells (Li et al., 2020).
