Evaluation of samples obtained by colonoscopy from patients with PD shows an association between the presence of reactive enteric gliosis, identified by the increase in glial markers glial fibrillar acidic protein (GFAP) and Sox10, together with the increase in proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1β, and chemokines as CCL2 and CCL5 (Devos et al., 2013; Perez-Pardo et al., 2019). Here, GFAP is linked to Parkinson disease.
