The unique characteristics of PSMA make it an excellent marker for prostate cancer, mainly due to several characteristics including: 1) expressed in the prostate, 2) upregulated in all stages of the disease, 3) overexpressed in disease progression or in metastases, 4) intact on the cell surface as membrane glycoproteins, present and not released into the circulation, 5) internalized after ligand binding (receptor-mediated endocytosis), 6) associated with enzymatic activity.3,18,23.
