Importantly, INAVA also has IBD-related variants according to the GWAS catalogue, namely rs12131796, rs35730213, rs55838263, rs7554511 and rs905634, and the genes CYTH1 and CDH1, coding for proteins downstream to INAVA, also have IBD-related variants according to the GWAS catalogue: rs17736589 for CYTH1, and rs16958356 and rs16958356 for CDH1. Therefore, gut epithelial adherens junctions seem to be heavily affected by genetic variation. Here, CYTH1 is linked to inflammatory bowel disease.
