Due to defects in the G1/S checkpoint and other DDR components, cancer cells are more reliant on the G2/M checkpoint as demonstrated by Wee1 overexpression in various tumors (e.g., glioblastoma and breast cancer) making it an attractive drug target for therapy (De Witt Hamer et al., 2011; Do et al., 2013; Bukhari et al., 2022).
