In the genetic field, a previous study has shown how patients with IBD carrying the p.I148M missense variant in the patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 3 (PNPLA3) gene, an important common genetic determinant of liver fat content and progression to chronic liver disease, have higher susceptibility to hepatic steatosis and liver damage [15]. This evidence concerns the gene PNPLA3 and fatty liver disease.
