ACE2 and COVID-19: This theory is commonly spread due to the well-known pathogenetic mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 ability to infect type II pneumocytes via angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) [37], cells that are in direct apposition to the alveolar vascular network leading to diffuse microvascular thrombosis [38] and high incidence of major thrombotic events in patients with COVID-19 [39].
